I love my T-Mobile G2, especially with its tight synchronization of gmail, google contacts, and google calendar.

I thought the G2's physical keyboard would be important for me (all of my previous smartphones have been keyboarded: RIM 950, Sidekick, Sidekick 2, T-Mobile Dash), but I've found that its Swype on-screen keyboard to be accurate enough and more convenient for short replies and entries.

Not good! We've had AT&T U-Verse without any major or persistent problems since the service was available here, maybe 2-3 years. (U-Verse is DSL but faster for some reason than normal DSL. But it is not appropriate if you run your own servers that require their own external-facing IPs, etc. Which you might.)

I saw a sign on the Metro (in French) that said, essentially, "If you want quality music on the Metro, don't give money to people who play in the cars. Only the people who play in the stations are licensed." So yes, the people who play in the cars are not supposed to do that.

I don't know if they have a vetting process for giving out licenses. The performers I saw ranged from a guy with a karaoke machine to a 10-piece classical string ensemble.

The truth is, other panelists will generally not challenge the moderator unless they know the moderator and came with specific ideas to talk about. I had no idea why I was on that panel, and had warned the programming people not to make me the moderator anywhere this time, for specific reasons.

Next time, it's okay to get your hand up and ask if any panelists had suggestions for time travel -- because some of us did. I put some of them in the steampunk story I just finished! ;^)

I know, we should have tried to grab the reins back from him. But sometimes, that just isn't going to happen. And the Mom stories will definitely go into world building somewhere, sometime.

I finished the book myself yesterday, and I enjoyed reading your review!

I rather liked the ending, though. True, nothing is resolved, but I don't think this could have expected in a book under 300 pages. This leaves the future wide open, however bleak it may be...

Too bad the author didn't concentrate on how the Holy Machine came to emergence after the her first lapses into awareness, but this also helped the plot by focusing on how George could repent for his sins.

If you haven't already read it, I recommend Greg Bear's Queen of Angels for the missing part about an AI's rise to consciousness.

This is just my view, today, and it's subject to change. I'm just brainstorming based on my own experience and study. Of course other opinions, including Elze's, I welcome and consider - and I may frankly just be poor at expressing myself or "getting things".:

I'd criticize intolerance in USA society. In Europe, the countries are closer together, languages mixed, etc. So there is a general appreciation and acceptance of different customs and methods.

I almost wonder bu can't finger the "GO USA! GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH" common identity is itself some striving to be "average" and "normal" and "same" in a ill kind of society way.

Since 9/11, we have only made it harder for visitors to come to our country. We have sold out our deals of "melting pot", "freedom" and "diversity". Our media and social issues sure seem to have degenerated into polarized discussions, including religion.

I try to be first that ALL are welcome to talk and piss me off - including the atheists. They can tell me I'm an idiot, I don't tend to give up - I tend to try to keep understanding their point of view - even if my current mind can't grasp it.

Back to discussion on a society level: the great and good news is that it might very well swing back the other direction. With the economy, our outside friends will be more important than ever.

Do society/stock markets have "seasons" like winter and summer? Do they go in some kind of "mob" pattern different from what any individuals would want? It's fascinating discussion, but I don't know the answers. I can just try to put into words what I see from my eyes.

I think I saw your name on Facebook in a comment to someone else's post not long ago, so I guess you have deactivated it very recently? Yes, some of the atheist "friends" are among the worst offenders in the sense of using Facebook as their newsreader dump.

That's a good blog you have there. Regarding cliquishness, I am planning to blog about it myself just as soon as I get over my current blogger's block. As far as the anti-feminist aspect of it, I've been fortunate enough not to have experienced it at science fiction conventions, as there are plenty of women on the panels, but I know that exclusion of women speakers is a big problem in science and tech-related conferences. It's been discussed at length recently in blogging circles, among them on geekfeminism.org (which I really like). I'm sadly not surprised that Singularity Summit is no different. While I'm very interested in the concepts of Singularity and transhumanism, I'm glad I don't miss out much by not going to it, because of all the wacky fringe the movement attracts, such as quantum microtubule guy, and the deny-women-right-to-vote guy you mentioned. Or, sadly, even Ray Kurzweil lately with his immortality vitamins.

I agree with you. I had to deactivate my FB account, because it had become too distracting even when I rigorously screened and chose friends. Some of my friends use FB as news/links dumps. Some have friends or relatives whose views are too unpalatable.

I'm a research scientist, a published author of books and essay, and one of the contributors to 50 Voices of Disbelief (I met Russ Blackford in an academic convention about sf). I was at FB long enough to see your response to Russ' thread about the Burbank convention. The sense of cliquishness you felt is fairly endemic to self-designated "progressive" movements.
